Well-known Georgian immunologist Tengiz Tsertsvadze dies aged 76

Tengiz Tsertsvadze, Georgian immunologist, professor, doctor of medical sciences, died on Thursday at the age of 76.

Family said Tsertsvadze had suffered illnesses later.


Tsertsvadze was the Director General of the Center for Infectious Pathology, AIDS and Clinical Immunology, a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, a recipient of the Presidential Order of Merit and Excellence.
On October 3, 2020, along with eight doctors fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, he was awarded the title of honorary citizen of Tbilisi.


The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, expresses grief over the death of Tsertsvadze.


He noted Tsertsvadze had made a great contribution to the development of Georgian medicine.


"I want to express my deep sorrow for the death of Mr. Tengiz Tsertsvadze. He had served the country, people, and their health for many years. He made a great contribution to the development of Georgian medicine, and I want to express my condolences to his family, friends, and relatives. It is a great loss for our country", said Kobakhidze.
