Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, on Tuesday criticized German ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer ,for allegedly spreading misinformation, claiming it led to misunderstandings about German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's statement.
Kobakhidze asserted that the ambassador's actions were “speculative and unprofessional” and accused the diplomat of previously engaging in partisan activities, such as participating in an election event with the Lelo opposition party.
He expressed disappointment that the ambassador's recent social media post was used by certain media outlets to falsely imply that Chancellor Scholz was commenting on the latest turmoil in Georgia over the foreign influence transparency law.
Kobakhidze clarified that Scholz's statement pertained to an incident in Germany from five years ago and also emphasized the “strong partnership and friendship” between Georgia and Germany, insisting “no ambassador could undermine this relationship”.
Kobakhidze urged the German state to address the ambassador's actions, suggesting they harmed both German and Georgian interests. He further claimed criticizing the ambassador was necessary to maintain the integrity of the German-Georgian relationship.
Fischer had shared a statement by Chancellor Olaf Scholz on social media. Scholz's statement mentioned rising politically motivated quarrels and attacks, emphasizing zero tolerance for hatred and violence. The lack of specificity in the ambassador's post led some Georgian media and the public to believe it referred to Georgia.
The German Embassy clarified that Scholz's statement was about recent events in Germany and had universal relevance.
