Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has expressed his aim to end the ongoing war in Ukraine, arrived in China on Monday.

On July 2, Orbán arrived in Kyiv and held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy During the meeting, Orbán proposed a cease-fire followed by negotiations with Russia. However, Kyiv rejected this proposal.

Shortly after, Orbán held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin in Moscow. After the meeting, the Hungarian Prime Minister noted that the positions of Ukraine and Russia remained significantly divergent. From July 1, Hungary assumed the presidency of the European Union for six months.

In response to Orbán's visit to Moscow and his meeting with Putin, the European Union clarified that Hungary did not have the authority to negotiate on behalf of the EU. Brussels maintained that it did not engage in any negotiations regarding Ukraine without Ukraine's participation. Following Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the European Union has severed official contacts with the Russian authorities.
